On April 4, 2017, there will be an Operational Referendum question on the election ballot designed to help our District overcome a financial challenge.  If the Operational Referendum passes and we receive additional funds from the state, we will not only be able to return to fiscal stability more quickly, we will be able to protect and develop educational programming, attract and retain great teachers, and rebuild district fund reserves.

"Shall the School District of West Allis-West Milwaukee, et al., Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, Wisconsin be authorized to exceed the revenue limit specified in Section 121.97, Wisconsin Statutes, by $2,500,000 a year beginning with the 2017-2018 school year and ending with the 2021-2022 school year, for non-recuring purposes consisting of maintaining current operations, retaining staff and funds for new programming?"

If approved by voters on April 4, 2017, residents would pay an additional $58 per year for every $100,000 of property value for five years.

We believe in the future of the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District and its legacy.  We are grateful for the deep sense of commitment shared by the citizens, students, parents, and staff in our community.  Our hope is that a successful Operational Referendum will help us avoid significant cuts and lay the foundation for a stable fiscal future.  We always want this community and our schools to be a place known for its ability to best serve children and their families.

What is an Operational Referendum?

An Operational Referendum asks voters for permission to exceed the state imposed revenue limit for the purpose of funding annual school operations. With this funding, we could protect and develop our educational programming, attract and retain great teachers, and rebuild our district fund reserves.  As we look at enrollment and budget projections, we are deeply concerned about the need to cut $2.5 million dollars in the coming school year.
