This month, students in the Lane Global program were involved in a Deeper Learning Project designed around health and wellness.  The project began with a visit from Margaux Chandler from Shred415 in Milwaukee. She led students in a work out session and answered questions about physical fitness.  Zach D’Arienzo, the Physician Assistant from the District’s Wellness Center, came to speak with students about the medical field and also answered questions about health.

After the presentations, students talked about their own experiences related to sleep, diet, safety, physical activity, and mental health.  “Our students are learning about journalism. They brainstormed ideas then got to work drafting articles,” explained teacher, Susan Heermans.

With drafts in hand, students participated in a feedback protocol to determine ways they could improve their writing.  After the stories were finished, some students were asked to record a podcast.

"I learned how to write from a journalist’s point of view and how to add details in third person,” says Emily, a student in the class. “The hardest part was having to make a podcast because I don’t like how my stories sound when I say them out loud.  My favorite part was getting feedback after my first writing because I knew it was going to help me.”

“We are proud of our students,” says Heermans. “This project involved interacting with people from the field and producing work in a journalistic style.”
