On Saturday, March 23, 2019, students from area schools participated in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned District Solo & Ensemble Music Festival hosted at West Allis Central High School. During the festival, which was free and open to the public, students performed vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator. There were 16 performance sites and nearly 700 events performed during the day.

“WSMA is proud of the quality music education experiences we support teachers in providing for their students. Our long-standing festival programs encourage well-rounded musicians who develop deeper understanding through performance preparation that culminates in comprehensive feedback from a qualified adjudicator. This opportunity, coupled with observing and listening to peer performances, is invaluable for musical growth,” said WSMA Executive Director Laurie Fellenz.

Students from Central, Nathan Hale, Frank Lloyd Wright, Lane, and West Milwaukee as well as nine schools from eight neighboring districts were at the festival. According to West Allis-West Milwaukee School District
Orchestra Director and Music Coordinator, Mary Pat Michels, “It is an honor to host this event. We are always excited to welcome students from all over southeastern Wisconsin. Everyone works hard to prepare and we’re proud of our results!”
