On March 11, 2020, Josslyn Welsh of Irving Elementary was named the winner of the Future Chef Competition. This year's theme was School Lunch Meal-Reimagined.

“The District joins 266 other school districts across the country holding Future Chefs events throughout February and March. Six elementary student finalists prepared their twist on school lunch,” said Sodexo Manager, Steve Kosnar.

“From here, Josslyn’s recipe moves forward along with 40 regional finalists. Sodexo judges will select five national finalists and those students produce a video of their entree. In the end, one winner is declared.”

“Entrees are judged using five critiera; originality, easy preparation, healthy attributes, kid friendly, taste, and plate presentation/appearance,” said Kosnar.
“I had the opportunity to meet with each future chef and they were all very excited. They worked hard to showcase their recipe.”

The judges were Board of Education members: Dan Bailey and Noah Leigh, Director of Finance and Operations, Caitlin Windler, and Sodexo employees: Executive Chef Jorge Rodriguez, District Manager Lori McMahon and District Manager Barry Orgeron.

“We are proud of our Sodexo Future Chef Competition. It helps connect students to the real-life work of culinary arts. Students used their academic skills and creativity to come up with something new for lunch!” adds Kosnar.
