Over the past year, the staff at Shared Journeys has worked closely with the West Allis Health Department to be approved breastfeeding friendly site.

“It was a ten step process for approval,” said program coordinator, Lisa Colla, “Everyone worked hard to meet the criteria of the program.”

Lisa Colla and Shared Journeys childcare provider, Jenny Szalacinski, were honored at the “Big Latch On.” The event, designed to promote breastfeeding, was sponsored by the West Allis Health Department and other local organizations such as Aurora Lactation Consultants, Authentic Birth Center, Changing Tent, Infant Massage, Mothering the Mother, Rec on the Go, Safe Kids, SE Wisconsin Milk Sharing, WIC and Womb Room.

Lisa Colla and her staff worked closely with Katie Sutton and Melissa Hanson to establish
a supportive, friendly environment for breastfeeding.  “We inform expectant and new families about the importance of breastfeeding and we provide breastfeeding resources,” said Colla. “There are so many benefits for breastfeeding. Research shows that mother-child bonding and the health benefits of mother’s milk can impact a child’s academic performance. We’re proud we earned the approval.”
