This year, Mother’s Day was going to be like none other so a group of Shared Journeys staff traveled to surprise the young mothers that are part of the program.  According to program facilitator, Lisa Colla, the governing board, advisory board members, therapy dog Koda, and pet owner, Beth Giacobassi (from Pets Helping People) set up a caravan to make a special visit to students.
“We did a Mother’s Day caravan and dropped off a care package on the porch,” explained Colla.  “Seniors were also given their Shared Journey graduation yard sign and a charm for their cap.  For many of these moms, it was their first Mother’s Day.  It was bittersweet they had to spend it at home.”
The baskets were made by Shared Journeys staff.  They included a journal, pen, chocolates, a bath bomb, baby clothes and a Mother’s Day Card.  Food and personal hygiene products were part of the care packages which were donated by Cathy Manthei, Apostle Presbyterian Church, and The Way Church.  Kohl's Corporate team donated jars filled with positive quotes. Baked goods arrived from Beth Giacobassi and Pam Dowling.
The moms knew Colla was dropping “something” off,  but they had no idea that a caravan would arrive in separate decorated cars.  Each car was honking and cheering them on while sharing a positive message.
“Mother’s Day is always a great opportunity for us to show students that we are proud of them. Our students are working hard to build a future for themselves and their child. Our goal was to make this day one to remember despite COVID-19,” said Colla.
