General Mitchell Elementary School was awarded a grant from The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) for up to $15,000 to design a green infrastructure, such as constructed wetlands, rain gardens, green and blue roofs, bioswales, and porous pavements.

The new design of the school grounds will help reduce the volume of stormwater in the sewerage system and the amount of pollutants discharged to the surface waters creating areas that once unusable can be used for educational opportunities.

Mitchell StudentsPrincipal Ryan Johnson stated, “The areas that were once unusable by the students and our community will become practical, functioning areas that can be used for relaxation and play. We would like to include a mindful path, agricultural exploration, safe play areas, and picnic areas for our families to enjoy all year round for decades to come. This is a great opportunity for us to enhance our learning environment.
