We are proud to announce that Shared Journeys Leader, Lisa Colla, was selected for the 2020 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Principal Leadership Award and Teacher Fellow Award.

The Principal Leadership Award recognizes leaders for setting high standards for instruction, achievement and character, and creating a climate to best serve students, families, staff, and community. This award includes a $6,000 grant for the recipient and for the school.

Lisa Colla has been a dedicated educator in the District for 30 years. She has been teaching and overseeing Shared Journeys Charter School since 2010. Shared Journeys is a school that serves pregnant and parenting teens. The program is also supported by Aurora West Allis Medical Center, a partner from the beginning.  According to Colla, “Our mission is to provide expectant and school-age parents an opportunity to complete a high school education, encourage strong parenting, and live healthy lifestyles. The students build post-secondary skills through a supportive community and innovative learning environment.”

Recently, Colla worked to provide childcare services at Shared Journeys. “For years, I knew that students struggled with childcare.  It was a daily obstacle for the students so I started working with our Governing Board to explore options to provide the service at school.  We are always trying to remove the barriers and ensure that each student is successful.”

For Colla it has been an honor to be part of the program. “I am thankful for my Board of Directors and our District for their vision.  We have wonderful teachers, staff members, and an incredibly supportive community. Most of all, it is amazing to work with our students.  They work hard to be college and career ready while parenting.”

“We are very proud of Mrs. Colla,” said Superintendent, Dr. Marty Lexmond, “She has always had an incredible vision for Shared Journeys and she has provided great leadership there.  She is making a difference in the lives of our youngest parents.”

Award recipients will be honored on May 9, 2020 in Milwaukee.
