On April 18, 2019, students from the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District were inducted by the Milwaukee Art Museum as official Junior Docents. The Junior Docent Program is in its 50th year coordinating with local schools. Currently, only eight area districts have been selected by Milwaukee Art Museum to participate on a yearly basis.

According to Art Curriculum Lead, Dan Walker, the students completed a Milwaukee Art Museum partnership program that spanned over three years. According to Walker, “Graduating students have gone through the same studies as the docents hired by the museum. I'm impressed with their knowledge of the pieces in the permanent gallery and their ability to talk about styles and artistic concepts. This kind of an experience helps our students build leadership skills.”

“These 5th grade students have visited the Milwaukee Art Museum 10 times to learn the tour guide curriculum. The creative interaction is scaffolded and rigorous. They studied the Elements and Principles of Art, Wisconsin history, Antiquities, and Contemporary Art. As part of their commencement, students made an art piece interpreting their favorite artist and gave gallery presentations.”
