On December 2, 2020, the students and staff at James E. Dottke Project-based Learning High School  held a virtual open house to help 8th graders and their families determine if partial or full enrollment at James E. Dottke Project-Based Learning High School is a good fit for the coming school year.

“Our goal was to help 8th graders learn about the NEW Dottke H.S. and our approach to project-based learning.  We also want to make families aware that we have a dual-enrollment partnership with Central and Nathan Hale, so deciding to attend Dottke does not have to be an all-or-nothing decision.  We are working to make sure that all students access the high school experience that is right for them,” explained Principal Greg Goelz.

Originally founded as an alternative education option, Dottke has now transformed into our District’s only fully-functioning project-based learning school for students grades 9 - 12.  Dottke provides a small school setting where students feel a strong sense of belonging and take ownership of their learning.  Teachers use a project-based learning model that focuses on the deeper learning competencies and student choice.  At Dottke, students take the content that they learn and then apply it in a real-world, authentic way.

“Now, more than ever, we see that education is not “one size fits all.”  There are options.  Over the last few years, the staff at Dottke have been addressing the need to develop a learning model that better prepares students to live life on their own terms.  Dottke’s focus has shifted to delivering a student-driven, project-based learning education to 100% of its students.  The school is prepared to serve up to 250 students, grades nine through twelve, of all backgrounds and abilities,” said Goelz.

“Our project-based learning model helps students apply their knowledge. Our school is structured in a way that fosters a strong sense of belonging.  We’re looking forward to welcoming ninth graders who want to be part of our “intentionally different” approach to teaching and learning, and where students love school.”
