During the week of January 20-24, 2020, a group of students in team “Excellence East” held a clothing drive for The Purple Heart Service Foundation. Their teachers, Mr. Collins and Ms. Christenson, were excited to report that students collected over 40 bags of clothes for the foundation.

The service-learning project was held over the course of the first semester.

Students chose a foundation or cause that they were passionate about, and they were grouped with other students with similar interests.

Collins said, “We are proud of our students and our community. The project was a great way to teach students about giving back!”

The class was studying a
unit about government which focused on the essential question of "What does it mean to be a good citizen?". We learned about the functions of government and our role in society. All of the students chose a social issue that they were passionate about to create a service-learning project to support a cause in our community.

“Projects ranged from collecting books to starting a library at the Sun Laundromat, to a group creating a "pet finder" to search for lost pets in the neighborhood,” said Collins.
