In December, Brandi Anthony, school counselor and advisor of Nathan Hale’s African American Youth Group took a group of students to Jefferson Elementary School. They read with children, assisted in the classroom, and most importantly established positive relationships with younger students in the District.

According to Anthony, “We are scheduled to do this once a month, with the exception of April because of testing. That month we will write letters and send them to students. In May, we will have an end of the year celebration.”

“It is an amazing experience for everyone involved. Our students have a great time and the littles really enjoy having teenagers in the building. One elementary student saw our group and shouted, ‘I see teenagers!’ with a big smile. It was a great moment for us,” said Anthony.

“Our goal is to make connections so that children benefit from the individualized academic and social attention that older students provide. Our students serve as positive role models and everyone comes away with the feeling of being needed and valued!”
