This year, our District continues its commitment to teaching and learning that involves Deeper Learning and Equity. We are working to develop school cultures where all students, teachers, and families are valued and empowered to learn and grow.

We all know that effective teaching and learning focuses on the mastery of reading, writing and math. Yet, we also know our students need far more than what is measured on standardized tests to achieve their goals.

So what does this look like in our schools?

At the elementary level, schools are working through the Deeper Learning Schools Process to reimagine what is possible for our students. Using a Design Thinking Approach, they are engaging students, teachers, families, and community members in a process of self discovery to determine how they can move forward to best meet the needs of all learners.

At the intermediate level, Deeper Learning Communities are being formed in recognition of our need to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences for all. For adolescents,
being part of a community is critically important. Communities may be comprised of two, four, or even five teachers working with flexible, collaborative groups of students. Through projects and exhibitions, students experience the Deeper Learning Competencies in ways that are authentic and meaningful to themselves and their community.

At our high schools, the Deeper Learning experiences we are exploring are grounded in
authentic work and true collaboration with others. This work is in its beginning stages but is promising for our future. In the area of career and technical education, art, music and our extra-curricular offerings like service clubs, students are developing the Deeper Learning Competencies now. Our work is to bring these experiences closer to the academic core of high school. You can learn more about the Deeper Learning competencies HERE.
