This month, Wilson Elementary School and Madison Elementary School will both receive new water fountain/filling stations as part of the Cool Water Program sponsored by Delta Dental.

The Delta Dental of Wisconsin Foundation awarded grants to a number of schools in Wisconsin to replace existing drinking fountains with new water fountain/bottle filling station. This includes installation, as well as reusable water bottles and toothbrushes for all students and staff.

As part of the grant, the recipients must have a plan in place to “choose water” as a healthy alternative to sugary beverages like soda, juice, and sports drinks. Not only does drinking water keep teeth strong and healthy, it also combats obesity and increases energy levels.

Brittany Verbanac, Kindergarten teacher at Wilson Elementary explains, “Last year, Wilson staff and teachers noticed students bringing in more and more reusable water bottles. The problem was students really struggled at our bubblers to refill their bottles.”

“When I saw the Delta Dental Grant, we thought it would be a great opportunity to tie it in with the Milwaukee Brewers Brent Suter Strike Out Waste and Protect the Environment Challenge.”

“We went to work in our classrooms. Students calculated how much time was spent out of class to refill their water bottles using bubblers. We created a school challenge and video to ‘Pitch Out the Waste at Wilson’ to kick start this initiative. Students began using the new water bottle filling station on Tuesday, September 24th and they love it.”

At Madison Elementary School, Principal, Breanne Willms says the water fountain/filling station was installed Friday, September 13th.  She explains, “Last year our students were working on projects related to caretakers of the planet, which meant finding alternative materials that were more beneficial to our environment. In addition, staff members focused on self-care, embarking on a health challenge to increase water intake. This particular grant just made sense and seemed to fit the needs of our school community. So far the water fountain/filling station has been a great addition to our building.”

Both schools and their thirsty students are grateful to Delta Dental!

Special thanks to the teachers at Wilson ELementary School that helped with this project: Brittany Verbanac, Amanda Hendrickson, Brendan Kelly, Lisa Erickson, Dana Azzolina, Mackenzie Novitski, Jen Koehler, Miranda Pierce, and Brittney Durham.
