As a community, we have a long tradition of working together to ensure that our schools are places where students are welcomed and inspired to do their best. We know each school in the District plays a vital role in preparing children for their future.

Over the past four years, we’ve been working diligently to address some significant challenges. We’ve balanced enrollment and open enrollment by implementing neighborhood school attendance areas. We’ve addressed a fund balance deficit with reorganization and budget cuts. We’ve consolidated to three intermediate schools and we’re working to sell our District property on South 70th street.

Now, we’re using a District-wide strategic plan to achieve our goals. We’re focused on teaching and learning in new and innovative ways. We’ve implemented better supports for the well-being of students in our schools and we’re using a new student information system to improve communication with students and families.

We’re making strides to ensure that all students are college and career ready when they graduate!

This December, I invite you to attend a “State of the Schools” presentation. It’s designed to help you understand where we’ve been and where we’re headed as a school community. We will be discussing a variety of topics:

  • Who are we?

  • How are we working to increase student achievement?

  • How are we supporting the social/emotional health of our students and families?

  • What’s on the fiscal horizon?

  • What’s next for our school facilities?

I encourage you -- whether you have school-age children or not -- to attend a presentation.  We all make a difference to our schools. I am looking forward to seeing you soon!
