Starting in March,  the U.S. Census Bureau will begin counting everyone living in the United States. Everyone needs to be counted. That includes children and newborn babies, citizens and noncitizens, relatives and nonrelatives, and even those staying at homes temporarily.

“A complete and accurate count is critical to the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District, our students and their families,” said Superintendent, Dr. Marty Lexmond.  “We use the accurate count for enrollment projections and federal funding. The next census won’t be until 2030.”

The census is an easy to complete questionnaire.  It will be distributed online, by phone or by mail and is available in 13 different languages.

Responses to the census are safe and secure. The law requires the U.S. Census Bureau to keep information confidential, and responses cannot be used against participants in any way.

Your response matters!

  • Census information impacts our schools, health clinics, fire departments, roads and highways.  As we begin our Facility Planning, it will shape many different aspects of our community.

  • Census information is used to determine how over $675 billion in federal funding flow into states and communities each year.

  • Census information is used to determine how many seats in Congress each state gets.

  • It's mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2: The U.S. has counted its population every 10 years since 1790.

Again, when you respond to the census, your answers are kept anonymous. They are used only to produce statistics. The law ensures that your private information is never published and that your answers cannot be used against you by any government agency or court.
