This is the image for the news article titled 2020-2021 District Solo & Ensemble Music FestivalEvery year in March, our District hosts a District Solo & Ensemble Festival that boasts 15 performance sites and approximately 600 events performed by our students and guests from as many as 15 different neighboring school districts.

WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin.  “WSMA enjoys a long tradition of providing quality music education experiences to over 100,000 students annually. These festivals provide students with an opportunity to enrich their musical abilities and understandings as they perform and receive feedback from qualified adjudicators, and observe and listen to the performances of their peers,” says WSMA Executive Director Laurie Fellenz.

According to District Orchestra Director and Music Coordinator, Mary Pat Michels, “Students from Central, Nathan Hale, Frank Lloyd Wright, Lane, and West Milwaukee as well as some neighboring districts are normally at the festival held in our District.  However, this past school year was very different in one unique way.  Events were solos performed virtually and due to Covid restrictions rather than public performances which also would include large ensembles such as string choirs, pops strings, jazz bands, various band choirs (same instruments performing in large ensembles) and choral ensembles.”

New challenges related to recording each event were met with some anxiety, but also student anticipation and teacher encouragement.  “WSMA provided opportunities for students across Wisconsin in the Spring of 2020 - the only state music association to do so in the entire country,” says Michels.  “In the 2020-2021 school year students had the opportunity to not only perform in spring district and state festivals, but also in fall district and state festivals as well.  With support and advice from area music administrators WSMA provided our students with every opportunity they could.”

“Everyone works hard to prepare and we’re proud of our results,” adds Michels. “We’re already looking forward to next year.  Our District Solo & Ensemble Festival will be in-person on February 26, 2022 at West Allis Central High School!”
