After months of negotiations, the staff and students at James E. Dottke welcomed a very special staff member.  According to Jeanine Daugherty, “I had my dog, WOW, in training for several months. He has passed his Therapy Dog test and is ready to start helping others in a school setting.”

Wow is a three year-old Belgian Malinois. He is “seated” in Daugherty’s classroom, but is available to anyone who needs two non-judgemental ears to listen and a warm, soft coat to pet. “Wow helps calm people when they are upset and he can cheer people up if they need it,” said Daughtery.

According to students, having Wow “on staff” makes the school feel more homey and warm. "A therapy dog is good about nudging people for attention. He reminds us how to stay in the present, rather than worrying about the things outside of school,” explains Daughtery. “New students have said they appreciate his friendly face greeting them each day. He’s an instant friend to all.”

“We think Wow can make a difference to our students by giving them one more thing that connects them to school. Even on the days they might not want to get up and come to school, they know Wow will be here waiting for them. It's just another way we’re following our motto of being ‘intentionally different’,” adds Principal, Greg Goelz.
