April 2013

Wellness Tip for April 2013:

Mindful Eating

Did you know that eating slowly can help you to maintain a healthy weight? Think about how often you eat a meal, only to look down at your plate and realize that you finished it without enjoying or tasting what you ate. Here are some tips to consider at meal and snack time:

  • Sit at a table whenever possible.
  • Turn off the television, cell phones, and any other electronic devices. (Put away the newspaper or book you are reading, too.)
  • Consider creating a relaxing environment for your meal: place some flowers on the table, light some candles, and play some soft music in the background.
  • Set your fork down between bites during your meal. Enjoy the taste, texture and aroma of your food. Chew slowly and swallow before picking up your fork for the next bite.
  • If you are having a snack, always utilize portion control by measuring out a serving. Place it in a bowl or on a plate and put away the bag or box. Don’t eat directly from the container.
  • Most importantly, listen to your body’s cues and stop eating when you feel satisfied – before you feel full.
