Welcome to Horace Mann

************************************************************************************

Dear Parent/Guardian,

This is always an exciting time of year.  We’ve had a change in seasons, day light savings has ended, and the holidays are quickly approaching.  In our school, the excitement level has been no different.  All of our students have completed their Fall MAP Assessment.  This now allows us, as a staff, to individualize our curriculum even more to meet the needs of each and every one of our students.  Our Third through Fifth grade students are well into their WKCE Assessments.  Our students will be completed with this by November 23rd.  We appreciate the effort by both parents and students with getting to school everyday as well as coming prepared to take our assessment.  We are also very excited as a school, to be able to present at the School Board Meeting on November 23rd.  This is our opportunity to show the city and District why Horace Mann is such a great school!  Finally, our tennis program is up and running.  We have 35 students involved, and the students have not only been focusing on reading and math during their study time but how to do a forehand and backhand.

Horace Mann has also had some special visitors to our building.  Mayor Devine was part of our “Welcome Back Night” and Judge Murphy was part of our 4th and 5th grade classrooms.  It has meant a lot to our students, staff, and families to know that the public supports and is involved in what we are doing as a building each and every day.

Since the implementation in September of our “PAWS- Parents Are Watching” Program, we have had roughly 150 students recognized for their leadership outside of our school building.  Students have been recognized for their efforts on sports teams, helping out at home, and even for lending a helping hand in the neighborhood.  This is great to see how our students are not only exhibiting these leadership qualities at school but outside of the school day as well.  We also had our first round of “Student of the Month” nominees.  These students were recognized for their attitude and efforts within the classroom.  Our nominees for the month of October were- Kamyla Ortiz, Marisa Ortiz, Leif Simons, Karinda De La Cruz, Diego De La Cruz, Joseph Marman, Heaven Lenz-Lasala, Olyvia Contreras, Angel Sandoval, Austin Kruk, Jacob Lyman, Bailey Mergenthaler, Desi Lopez, Elise Pyzska, Jayde Weeks, Naomy Lopez, Alberto Hermosillo, Nevaeh Guerrero, Diana Koltermann, Emma Bremer, and Micheal Winston.

Finally, I would like to thank the staff at Mann for all of their hard work and encouragement for not only your own classroom students but ALL students who attend Horace Mann.

Jeff Thomson
