WAWM Shining Strings

Shining Strings

Mrs. Mary Pat Michels, Director

The West Allis-West Milwaukee Shining Strings are a string ensemble made up of WAWM School District orchestra students in grades 7-12.  Shining Strings performs for school district activities, community service groups, civic organizations, and private events.  Donations are gratefully accepted to help defray the cost of purchasing music, purchase uniforms, and to provide scholarships for students to attend the Shining Strings Camp for one week in the summer.

Goals and Mission

  • To provide highly motivated WAWM string players the opportunity to perform music at an advanced level in an ensemble comprised of members of all WAWM Secondary Schools.

  • To provide interested students throughout the WAWM School District with the opportunity to study and learn a variety of music (i.e., classical, pop and ethnic) and to make available opportunities to perform music of those genres at a higher level.

  • Students will participate in summer camp.During these sessions the students will have the opportunity to “speak the language of music” as they delve more deeply into an understanding and learning of a variety of musical repertoire that will be performed throughout the year.

  • Membership in his/her school orchestra is a requirement of each student in order to be able to participate in the WAWM Shining Strings.

  • Students are expected to prepare their music and keep it at performance level throughout the year.

  • WAWM Shining Strings provides a unique mentor program between high school and intermediate school aged string players.

  • WAWM Shining Strings will have performance opportunities in the community and schools throughout the year.Several sets of music will be learned to offer a variety of entertainment for these events.

  • Small ensembles (quintets, quartets, etc.) comprised of WAWM Shining Strings members will play events as needed.
