Red Ribbon Week is a national awareness campaign that recognizes the impact of drug and alcohol abuse on communities across the country. Every day millions of lives are affected by loss, violence and destruction caused by misuse of these substances. This fall 32 members of the school organization SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions, at West Allis Central, West Allis Nathan Hale, and James E. Dottke High School decided to raise awareness through creative messages about drug and alcohol use.

Main entrances at Central and Nathan Hale displayed posters and red ribbons to catch the attention of the staff and students. Announcements were made to encourage all students to wear red as a show of support to reduce drug and alcohol use. Hundreds of students and staff at Nathan Hale wore red and were acknowledged during their lunch hours. Central students conducted a bake sale to raise funds in support of drug and alcohol education projects planned for the school year.  At Dottke, students established a memorial “wall” in the lunchroom where all students could leave post it notes with messages of encouragement and support for each other.

While hundreds of students participated in the Wear Red Day activities, many more benefitted school-wide from seeing the anti-drug use messages displayed. Central created a huge bulletin board display in the Cafeteria reminding everyone that students are “Too Cool to Start”. Hale displayed the “Too Cool to Start” message in the fence outside of the Cafeteria and posted yard signs outside of school displaying the message “Hale Supports Drug Free Choices”. Students estimate that as many as 2,500 fellow classmates were exposed to the positive messages of Red Ribbon Week.

All interested students are invited to join SADD Chapter members as they begin to plan their next school and community projects, including Drug Facts Week, Peers with Purpose, and Impact Day. Thank you to the West Allis-West Milwaukee Community Coalition for sponsoring the SADD Chapters at each high school and to the students who take a stand to support healthy lifestyles.
