In February, representatives from the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District headed to the Wisconsin Dells to present at the state Narenwich Conference.

According to Lisa Colla, program coordinator for Shared Journeys, “It’s an honor to be selected to present at the Narenwich conference. My workshop, Helping Teens Find Their Path at Shared Journeys was about how Shared Journeys is supporting the youngest parents in our District. I gave an overview of our history and the development of our school. I discussed our community partnerships and service learning opportunities. We talked about individual learning plans and deeper learning opportunities for our students.”

Teachers Jeanine Daugherty and Bernie McCarthy from James E. Dottke High School were also asked to present. Their workshop,
Implementing Project Based Learning in an Alternative Education School: Focus on Using PBL in English and Math guided attendees through the various elements of project based learning. The presentations also included a discussion of Dottke’s overall theme of Wellness.

“We were proud to have been selected to speak to educators from all over the state,” says McCarthy. “Mrs. Daugherty and I focused on the strategies our teachers use to build strong relationships with students. We also discussed the importance of creating projects that connect to career pathways and deeper learning for our students.”

James E. Dottke principal Greg Goelz adds, “We regularly host school district representatives that come see the exciting and innovative work being done at our school. We are always happy to share ideas and NAREN has had an on-going interest in the programs and practices in the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District.”
