When Principal, Greg Goelz, talked with the father of a student that operates a barber shop about providing hair cuts at James E. Dottke High School, a plan to help students in a new way was created.

“Mervin Estrada, the owner and operator of Razor Sharp Barber Shop, jumped at the chance to come in and provide free haircuts and mentoring to our students,” said Goelz.

To kick things off, Estrada visited the school during the lunch periods to introduce himself to students. A week later, he brought in his barber's chair and all of his equipment to cut hair after school. For the remainder of the school year, Estrada will come in twice a month to give Dottke students free haircuts and mentoring.

“We used our special student lounge area for Mr. Estrada’s “shop” and six of our students got haircuts on the first night. They walked away feeling on top of the world and they couldn't believe that it was free!” explained Goelz. “It's a great feeling for kids who don't typically get a professional haircut to walk away feeling valued and confident. We are really thankful to Mr. Estrada. He is making a difference by being so generous to us.”
