Third grade students in Team Odyssey at Franklin Elementary School are busy creating game boards in a collaborative deeper learning project called "Branches of Government.”

The students began the project by learning about how government works and exploring current game board models.  “We want our students to ‘go deep’ and one way to do that is by giving them the opportunity to innovate and participate in self-directed learning” said Caroline Aiello.

Students brainstormed their ideas, then worked together to create game board designs.  “Students were also responsible for utilizing their new civics knowledge to write challenging questions that players answer to advance in the game,” added
Kari Rapp.

After students created a prototype, they shared their games with each other and with some older students in the fifth grade.  With this feedback, students worked to revise their games. This format of critique and revision is central to Project Based Learning.

Now students have prepared the final pieces for their “official” game boards.  They designed invitations and are hosting a game day for a 5th grade class and parents to share their completed games and hard work.
