Concert Band/Wind Symphony
Credit: 1.00 (2 Semesters)
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

This course is designed for any student who has played or is presently playing a band instrument. Students will read and interpret music, further develop their technical skills and expand their musicianship. They will learn about composers and study genres and cultures to better understand music. This ensemble will have 3 to 4 formal concerts a year. Concert band members will also participate in marching band, pep band, and WSMA solo/ensemble festival events. Out of class participation is required.

Symphonic Band
Credit: 1.00 (2 Semesters)
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

This class is for students who demonstrate the desire and ability to perform more challenging band music. Students will read and interpret advanced repertoire, increase their technical ability and refine their collective musicianship. In addition, band members will work to develop individual performance, listening, and analytical skills. This ensemble will have 4 to 5 formal concerts per year. Symphonic Band members will also participate in marching band, pep band, and WSMA solo/ensemble festival events. Out of class participation is required.

Jazz Band
Credit: .50 (2 Semesters)
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Jazz Band is an auditioned group that meets outside of the school day. It is open to all students who play flute, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, trombone, and drum set. Students playing these instruments must also be enrolled in either Concert and or Symphonic Band. Jazz Band is also open to any student who plays electric guitar, bass guitar, or piano. Students playing these instruments do not need to be enrolled in Concert Band or Symphonic band. Guitar and piano players must be able to read music notation and chord symbols. The content of this course includes extensive study in the development and knowledge of jazz history, by studying interpretation of this course includes extensive study in the development and knowledge of jazz history. By studying interpretation of jazz rhythms, articulations and improvisation techniques, students will develop as performers and informed listeners. This ensemble will have 2 to 3 formal performances per year including participation at the WSMA solo/ensemble festivals. Out of class participation is required.
