Spotlight School News ________________________________________________________________________________________________ What is a Lab School? Staff development is built on the premise that when teachers are trained and staff developed, they implement comprehensive strategies with fidelity. With the guidance of nationally known comprehension expert Stephanie Harvey, model lab teachers have been trained to demonstrate effective comprehension instruction within an active learning environment. Participant teachers will observe Wilson lab classrooms and then return to their buildings to share these ideas with their colleagues. Schools across Wisconsin are invited to visit and observe the Wilson Model Lab School. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ WAWM Schools District Balanced Literacy Background The West Allis-West Milwaukee School District has had a strong Literacy Program from the early 1990's. The district has experienced declining enrollment, changing demographics and greater cultural diversity. With the changing demographics, the district realized that it needed to change its delivery of Balanced Literacy. Reading teachers were supported at each elementary school to provide early literacy intervention and intermediate literacy intervention. Reading teachers were trained in the Reading Recovery Model so that the needs of early readers could be met.
