General Overview:

James E. Dottke High School and the Learning Center provide options for students who will have more success in non-traditional learning environments.  Each student at WAWM LC/JED will receive an Individualized Learning Plan and Graduation Plan to help them have the greatest opportunity for success.

About the Program:

WAWM LC/JED offers the opportunity for students to accelerate their credit capture and credit recovery.  Students are scheduled for a minimum of four class periods.  Credit recovery and accelerated credit options include a Personal Physical Education requirement,Work Experience for credit, and a Volunteer Experience Student Initiated Project (SIP).  Students who are in good academic and behavioral standing at JED may also take classes at either Nathan Hale or West Allis Central in an area of interest.  Students at WAWM LC/JEDare eligible to participate in sports/clubs/activities at their home schools if they meet district requirements, and are students in good standing at JED.

Academics:

Students at JED are exposed to a range of classes that include the core areas of study and some electives as well.  A strong emphasis has been placed on math and literacy to assist our students in life after high school.  Classes atWAWM LC/JED are designed to actively engage the learner.  Students are required to complete all academic work during their school day to meet the minimum requirements.  Students who reach for higher levels of achievement complete projects outside of school related to their learning.  Each student will keep and maintain a portfolio of their work here, which will also include information on goal setting, performance reviews, and post-secondary plans.  A wide range of post-secondary opportunities are discussed with students, who will conduct college visits, and explore other opportunities such as internships and apprenticeships.

DTRT:

DTRT stands for "Do the Right Thing".  Our DTRT program is designed to assist our students on focusing on many of the barriers that have kept them from being completely successful in their learning environments.  We focus on responsibility, citizenship, communication, and many more of the essential skills that will allow students to continue to be successful after high school.

School Wide Behavioral Expectations and Attendance:

Students at WAWM LC/JED are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner at all times. Our program utilizes the Capturing Kids' Hearts program, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, DTRT, and the model of ATM (A Teachable Moment) to help create a complete student with the essential skills for college and career readiness.    

Students at WAWM LC/JED are also expected to adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the School District of West Allis-West Milwaukee's Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.  Daily and timely attendance are required of all students at WAWM LC/JED.  If attendance becomes or behavior becomes an issue, a Student/Parent Intervention meeting is conducted to determine the cause of the behavioral or attendance issue and to develop a plan for improvement.
