At West Allis Central we have implemented a comprehensive plan for encouraging and recognizing positive choices and behaviors at school.  The plan comes from the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports model.  One element of the model includes acknowledgement of students for their positive behaviors.  At Central we accomplish this in a number of ways.  Students can be recognized as individuals, as a class, or even at the grade level.  Here are a few of the ways we are creating a positive culture at West Allis Central High School:

Herograms—These are given to students by teachers for improvement in grades, excellent test scores, or other academic reasons.  Students receive a small note which they can take home.  They are recognized over announcements, and have a chance to win prizes, which are drawn on a weekly basis.

Gold, Maroon, White Cards—Students may earn a Gold, Maroon, or White Card based on their GPA for the previous semester.  Dependent on the level, the cards earn students complimentary items from our food service, discounts, among other prizes.  This year we awarded over 450 students with one of the cards.  We will award the cards again after the 1st Semester is completed.

Bulldog Bucks—Students can receive a Bulldog Buck from any staff member for Random Acts of Kindness and following the Central Code of Conduct. Each week will have a different focus for improvement. So far, we have focused on being on time to class and proper technology use. Students who save their Bulldog Bucks can spend them in the spirit shop on things like chips, juice, a special pass for skipping in the lunch lines, positive phone calls home, reduced detention time, t-shirts, and much, much more!

Classroom Incentives—Students can receive a reward as a class by coming to class on time and prepared.  Administrators randomly make classroom checks and can reward an entire class if all students were on time and/or prepared for class.  Two classrooms are then recognized as Class of the Week over announcements and are posted in the Cafeteria.  The entire class receives some form of reward.  In the 1st Quarter 16 classrooms were recognized as Class of the Week, and over 125 classes received a Classroom Incentive reward.

At West Allis Central we are working hard to create an inviting school environment that encourages positive behaviors and choices among our students.  We feel the PBIS model of acknowledgement is just one element of creating that environment.  Please check out our school website to see the many great things happening at West Allis Central High School.
