Jefferson Elementary School is located at 7229 W. Becher Street, West Allis, WI. Serving students in 4-Kindergarten through fifth grade, Jefferson has a population of over 500 students and a staff of over 50. Being a SAGE school, our primary classrooms have 15 students; whereas our intermediate classrooms range from 22-30 students.
Although the staff has a wide range of educational background, they all have one central focus-being child centered. We emphasize teaching literacy by following a Guided Reading model and a Six+-Trait Writing model. We strive to integrate social studies and science in our literacy blocks. Our comprehensive approach to mathematics includes a balance of understanding, computing, applying, reasoning, and performance tasks. Our specialty programs include technology, art, vocal music, orchestra, band, and physical education. Our student support service is staffed with social worker and school psychologist, special education teachers, gifted and talented teachers, reading specialists and after school PASS instructors. Many incentives are provided to encourage good citizenship and academic success, such as, daily classroom awards, weekly Good Deed drawings, monthly Citizenship themes, and quarterly Jefferson-fests. Community services that work hand-in-hand with Jefferson are the West Allis Police Department DARE officer and the West Allis Health Department.
Student activities vary throughout the year and by grade level but include: intramurals, yearbook, student council, peer mediators, cadets, student talent show, AV Club Battle of the Books, Quiz Bowl, daily run, early bird hoops, chorus, Camp Upham experience, Read Across America, recess playmates, reading buddies, and student tutors, Senior Partners, and Therapy Reading Dogs. The West Allis - West Milwaukee Recreation Department provides many extra-curricular activities throughout the year and orchestrates a daily after school SAFE program. Coupled with a highly involved PTA that sets up and provides monthly family activities such as skating, dances, swimming and reading carnivals, Jefferson students are highly active.
The Jefferson Code of Conduct sums up who we are: The Jefferson Community is Respectful, Responsible, Polite and Kind, and Ready to Learn.
