Schools Attend State Recognition Ceremony

(October 14, 2008)  On Monday, October 13th  five schools from the West Allis - West Milwaukee School District received their 2008 – 2009 New Wisconsin Promise Schools of Recognition awards at Noon in the State Capitol in Madison.  Franklin, Lincoln, Pershing, West Milwaukee, and Wilson are the five schools who were on hand to receive their awards from Elizabeth Burmaster, State Superintendent of Schools.  Each school received a plaque and $1500 for use on any school-related activity.

Schools receiving awards must be eligible to receive federal title I funding and be among the highest poverty schools in the state based on free or reduced-price hot lunch data.  Additionally, student achievement on statewide reading and mathematics assessments must outperform the state average for schools with similar poverty and grade configurations.  Finally, the schools must have made adequate yearly progress for the past two years as defined by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

This is the third year in a row that Lincoln, Pershing, and West Milwaukee have earned this honor and the second year in a row for Franklin and Wilson schools.  Please help us congratulate the staff from these schools and ALL schools in our District for making the commitment to putting children first.
