Strategic Structural Plan for Student Success Update from Superintendent Kurt Wachholz

(October 24, 2007)  The West Allis - West Milwaukee School District will embrace grades six through eight intermediate schools targeted  to begin with the 2008 - 09 school year.  This decision was supported by the Board of Education after three years of intense study, several surveys, hundreds of hours of research and upon the recommendation of the community-based Strategic Structural Review Committee and the administrative staff.

Since the early 1980s, the district has educated students in grades seven and eight middle schools.  Beginning in September of 2008, schools will be organized around pre-kindergarten through grade five elementary schools, grades six through eight intermediate schools, and grades nine through twelve high schools. Those involved in this recommendation believe that this research-based model is age appropriate, provides instructional coherence and consistency for students, is easier for parents to partner in education, aligns better with state and federal assessments, and would allow the district to coordinate programs more easily.

The ultimate expected result of all this is higher levels of student achievement and opportunity.
