WAWM Schools to Celebrate Pinwheels for Peace

(September 17, 2008)  On Monday, September 22nd  twelve schools from the West Allis - West Milwaukee School District are helping celebrate Pin Wheels for Peace, a day to celebrate “Whirled Peace”.  This is a non-political driven event allowing students to take on their own meaning of peace.  The project is art and literacy based which allows student to use these learned skills while creating their pinwheels.  It’s a day celebrating a state of calm and serenity, with no anxiety, the absence of violence, freedom from conflict or disagreement among people or groups of people.  Each of our schools is sending up to 5 pinwheels for placement in front of the administration building located at 9333 W. Lincoln Avenue.

This event began on September 21, 2005 by two Art teachers in Florida.  It has since grown from 500-thousand pinwheels the first year to more than 1.2-million in 2007.
